Drawing from the Masters
Anatomy, Reed Pen & Conte' Workshop

Instructor: Joshua Fallik

Modeled after the teachings of Renaissance and Dutch Masters who combined visual poetry with a newly acquired scientific knowledge, this course combines the following elements:

 

1) The mechanics of the human body.

   The body is divided into easy to understand muscle groups

    Body paint is used by the instructor to paint the muscles on live models.

 

2) Drawing lessons.

    Instructor demonstrates how to convey movement, rhythm, mass and line, how to  determine correct proportions and measurements.  The use of light and shade in creating three dimensional effects. How to create a center of interest and guide the observer eye. 

    Drawing from the model includes drawings in which the model is posed the same way as a specific Old Master drawing.

   Instructor provides individual critiques.

 

3) The visual language of the Masters.

    Short talks using drawing reproductions of the old and contemporary masters, illustrating how they depict form, structure, gesture, eye movement and anatomy. 

4) Learning in class how to cut and prepare Reed Pens.

 

5) Drawing in class with reed pen and sepia ink washes.

 

6) Drawing in class with Conte' sanguine chalk.

 

Course Details  

The Body is divided into muscle groups, each of which is taught through a short talk covering both the muscles and the visual language of the Masters. And by Students drawing from the live model.

 

Students prepare Reed Pens and apply wet drawing media, as used in Rembrandt workshop in the seventeenth century.

Instructor provides demonstrations and individual critiques.

    Body paint is used by the instructor, Joshua Fallik, to paint the muscles on live models.

    Beginners to advanced students are welcomed.

 

Participant can expect to gain from taking this course: 

∙  Knowledge of how to draw.

∙  Practical knowledge of the Masters’ concepts and techniques.

∙  Knowledge of art history.

∙  Knowledge of basic anatomy for the artist.

∙  Seventeenth Century basic Reed pen and Sepia Ink wash drawing.

 

In my classes I have taught professional artists, young art students, retirees, house wives/husbands, working people as well as teenagers.
